Do You Know This Writer Riddle?

March 18, 2011

The Lord of the Rings was my friend.

He called me Jack as others did.

I left the church, but found it again,

Then wrote about mortal sin.

My closet was my greatest work,

The Oxford Inklings did assert.

Nobody noticed when I passed away.

I died the same day as J.F.K.

Who Am I?

Find the answer and explanation here.

Very cool! I love your riddles and the explainations are wonderful literary trivia.

So glad you enjoyed it, Cecilia. This is the first time I’ve provided explanations. I may go back an add some on a few other riddles. :)

Thanks Leah. I always have fun writing these riddles. The research is interesting. :)

My only guess would be C.S. Lewis. Am I right?

I was thinking C.S. Lewis, too, but I am intrigued by the “closet” part. Going now to read the explanation. Thanks for the riddle!

You’re right. Wardrobe is another word for closet. But I bet you knew that. :)

This is a good one, but you can’t catch me!
Clive Staples has been my fave for a long time.
Tolkein Called him Jack and was a fellow member of The Inklings.
He went into his wardrobe and discovered Narnia.
He came out of the closet transformed from atheism/agnosticism into a new man.
Mere Christianity is arguably his best apologetic work.
His writer-wife Joy died of cancer leaving him heartbroken, after which he almost lost his faith.
He also died too young, making me wonder what masterpieces were never written, leaving us all much the poorer.
    Nice one,V., and thanks :)

Thanks, Len! It was satisfying to say, “Yes!” and so fun to say, “Oh! I never knew that!”

Ahh! I’m excited! I actually got this one! :) I wasn’t getting any of them for a really long time, so I was beginning to think I was daft, hehe.

But I love C.S. Lewis and have a biography about it him simply titled: “Jack”, so it fits.

I love C.S. Lewis, too. I’m so glad you stopped by today. Have a great week, Lizzie!

I guessed it without cheating. But I didn’t know he died the same day. :(
